The Three Lions have ‘somehow’ made it to the semi-finals of the 2024 Euros. A nail-biting encounter against Switzerland at Dusseldorf Arena culminated in penalties as Jordan Pickford and Arsenal star boy Bukayo Saka took center-stage in the celebrations. The Arsenal winger certainly lived up to his expectations, scoring a crucial goal and converting his penalty in the shootout.
Switzerland were on the back of a historic win against defending champions Italy in the Round of 16. However, Gareth Southagte‘s men withstood the storm for 120 minutes, and finally took the upper hand through Pickford. Of all people, England have Bukayo Saka to thank for a spot in the semi-final. The 22-year-old stepped up with just ten minutes to go, finding the side netting from outside the area after cutting onto his left.
The forward finally shut up his critics when he comfortably dispatched his penalty kick against Swiss keeper Yann Sommer. Switzerland took the lead in normal time with just 15 minutes to go through Breel Embolo.
Despite the late scare, England are through to the semi-finals. They will take on the Netherlands on the 10th of July for a spot in the final.
Fans react to Bukayo Saka’s masterclass to guide England to the semi-final
Bukayo Saka was put under immense pressure ahead of the game, with questions raised about his position, gameplay and much more. From Ian Wright to Cole Palmer and Gareth Southagte, quite a few men have stood in the way of Saka having a ‘good’ tournament. However, the Arsenal man broke free of his shackles on Saturday night as England beat Switzerland to book a spot in the semi-final.
A fan said that he couldn’t be more happier for Saka and his redemption arc with the England squad. Another ordered rival fans to never compare him with Phil Foden or Cole Palmer again. Saka’s goal in the 80th minute had many admirers, with a few even admitting that it was the best goal England scored at the Euros. Fans also shared Saka’s girlfriend Tolami Benson posing with his Player of the Match award following the game.
Fans ordered Southgate to never drop him again from the starting line-up at the Euros. Some were still angry about how Saka was treated when he missed the penalty against Italy in the final 4 years back. Saka himself thanked God and expressed his releif on putting his penalty to bed. The No.7 comfortably placed his shot to the far bottom right corner against Sommer.
