A Tbilisi court has acquitted Nikoloz Basilashvili of the charge of Physically abusing his former wife. The model Neka Dorokashvili, whom he married in 2019, accused the Georgian tennis player, who broke into the ATP top 20, of physical abuse.

As far as the charge of physical abuse is concerned, the judge concluded that she could have caused a bruise by holding her baby awkwardly. In her testimony, Drokashvili—who is also a fashion designer, businesswoman, and investor—said that her ex-husband had restricted her employment options and had taken control of her accounts on social media.

Following a charge of domestic violence made by Dorokashvili after the couple had split up in 2018, Basilashvili was detained in May 2020. Basilashvili after the judgment, with a sigh of relief said that he was ‘quite happy’ with the decision.

“All these false accusations were very difficult for me to bear, and I am very glad that it’s all over. The priority for me now is to restore my relationship with my child,” he further added.

However, the prosecution does not seem to agree with the decision. According to the news reports coming in from Georgia, Drokashvili’s team will appeal against the judgment in the higher courts.
