Bruce E. Grewcock has been the CEO of Kiewit for more than a decade’s time. Due to this, he has had a notable impact on construction and engineering in not just the United States but also the rest of North America as well. Here are 10 things that you may or may not have known about Bruce E. Grewcock:
1. Went to Colorado School of Mines
For his education, Grewcock went to the Colorado School of Mines. Given its name, it should come as no surprise to learn that said school specializes in providing an excellent education to people interested in mining as well as various related topics. In fact, the Colorado School of Mines’s reputation is good enough that there are those who consider it to be one of the best institutions in its particular field.
2. Studied Mining Engineering
In Grewcock’s case, he studied mining engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. Said subject covers a wide range of responsibilities. For example, there are some mining engineers who focus on the processes for finding mineral resources. In contrast, there are other mining engineers who focus on the extraction of those mineral resources. On top of this, there are even mining engineers who specialize in minimizing the environmental impact of mining operations, which is a topic that has been becoming more and more important in recent times.
3. Started Out in Coal
Grewcock’s career started out in coal. To be exact, he started out in the coal operations of Utah International stated in the northwestern section of New Mexico. In modern times, New Mexico still uses a fair amount of coal for its power generation. However, it is interesting to note that its legislature has taken a strong interest in reducing its reliance on coal in preference for more sustainable sources of power, as shown by its recent passage of a law mandating a full transition to carbon-free sources by 2045.
4. Joined Kiewit As Chief Engineer of Black Butte Mine
In 1982, Grewcock joined Kiewit as Chief Engineer of Black Butte Mine. There is more than one place by that name in the United States. However, it seems safe to say that the Black Butte Mine in question is the one situated in the state of Wyoming that mines coal.
5. His Responsibilities Have Expanded Over Time
Over time, Grewcock’s responsibilities expanded. For example, he was the President of the Kiewit Mining Group by 1992, with the result that he was overseeing the full range of the company’s operations in that regard. Later on, he took on responsibilities for the construction division, which was followed by his eventual rise to the positions of COO in 2000 and then CEO in 2005.
6. Has Overseen Considerable Growth
Kiewit has seen considerable growth under Grewcock’s leadership. For proof, considering the fact that the company saw $10.4 billion in revenue in 2011 compared to $4.1 billion in revenue in 2005. Some of this growth has come from Kiewit focusing on its existing customers in its existing lines of business. However, it should be noted that the company has put serious effort into capitalizing on other opportunities as well, with an excellent example being a number of strategic acquisitions under Grewcock’s leadership that enabled it to spread out its presence further than otherwise possible.
7. Has Taken an Interest in Safety and Ethics
Speaking of which, Grewcock has shown an interest in safety as well as ethics when it comes to running the company. This can be seen in how Kiewit under Grewcock’s leadership sponsored the first Safety Summit for the industry as a whole in 2007. Likewise, this can be seen in how Grewcock became one of the founding members of the Construction Industry Ethics and Compliance Initiative, which exists for the purpose of sharing the best practices when it comes to relevant issues as well as sustaining them.
8. Contributes Much to the Colorado School of Mines
Grewcock contributes much to the Colorado School of Mines, so much so that he is considered to be one of its top individual donors. In particular, it is interesting to note that he set up a scholarship to provide a measure of support for students going to the school from out of state, which was motivated in part by his positive memories of fellow students who came from various states situated throughout the United States. Besides his financial contributions, Grewcock is involved with the running of the Colorado School of Mines to some extent as well, seeing as how he is a member of its foundation board of governors.
9. A Governor of the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben
Besides his involvement with his Alma mater, Grewcock is involved in a number of other organizations as well. For instance, he is a governor of the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben, which is a philanthropic organization based out of Omaha, NE that seeks to build a “more prosperous heartland” where everyone can succeed. Some people might wonder how the philanthropic organization came by its name, which sounds rather unusual to say the least. However, there is no great mystery to it, seeing as how Ak-Sar-Ben is just Neb-Ras-Ka reversed.
10. Member of the Business Roundtable
Furthermore, Grewcock is a member of the Business Roundtable. Said organization is a group consisting of the CEOs of some of the most notable companies in the United States, who have gathered together for the purpose of promoting pro-business public policies. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Business Roundtable is very influential, so much so that it has been able to exert a significant impact on the outcomes of various policy decisions at the federal level in the United States.
